Sea Turtle Life Cycle

Sea turtles are among the oldest living creatures on Earth, having existed for more than 100 million years. These remarkable marine reptiles spend most of their lives in the ocean, yet they return to sandy beaches to lay their eggs, continuing a life cycle that has remained largely unchanged for millions of years. Understanding the sea turtle life cycle highlights the incredible challenges these animals face and the importance of protecting them.

The life cycle begins when an adult female sea turtle returns to the beach where she was born or a nearby nesting area. Usually under the cover of darkness, she crawls onto the sand and digs a deep nest using her rear flippers. After laying around 80 to 120 eggs, depending on the species, she carefully covers the nest with sand before returning to the ocean. The eggs are then left to develop without parental care.

After an incubation period of approximately 45 to 70 days, the hatchlings begin to emerge from their shells. Working together, they dig their way to the surface and usually leave the nest at night, when cooler temperatures and darkness reduce the risk of predators. Guided by the natural light reflecting off the ocean, the tiny turtles make a dangerous journey across the beach toward the sea.

The early stage of life is the most challenging. Birds, crabs, fish, and other predators capture many hatchlings before they reach adulthood. Those that survive spend several years drifting with ocean currents while feeding on small marine organisms. This period is often called the “lost years” because scientists know relatively little about their movements during this stage.

As sea turtles mature, they move to feeding grounds such as coral reefs, seagrass meadows, or coastal waters, depending on the species. Their diet varies widely. Some turtles feed mainly on jellyfish, while others eat seagrass, algae, sponges, or shellfish. Adult sea turtles continue growing slowly and may take 20 to 30 years or more to reach reproductive age.

Once fully mature, female sea turtles begin the remarkable cycle again by migrating long distances to their nesting beaches. Many species return to the same region where they hatched, demonstrating an extraordinary ability to navigate across vast oceans.

Unfortunately, sea turtles face numerous threats throughout their lives, including plastic pollution, accidental capture in fishing gear, coastal development, climate change, and illegal egg collection. These challenges have placed several sea turtle species at risk of extinction.

The sea turtle life cycle is a powerful example of nature’s resilience and wonder. Every stage, from a tiny hatchling crossing the beach to an adult returning to nest, plays an essential role in the survival of the species. Protecting nesting beaches and marine habitats is crucial to ensuring that sea turtles continue their incredible journey for generations to come.
